If you’re looking at this product and wondering what all of those numbers actually mean, here is my easy-to-understand breakdown.

That is one reason I like the Palm Life formula. I can turn the bottle around and easily see exactly what I am getting.

Why We Use Palm Life Omega 3

Omega-3 supplements are one of those things I’ve looked at many times over the years, but comparing them can get confusing fast.

There are huge numbers on the front of some bottles, different amounts of EPA and DHA, different types of fish oil, and all kinds of claims about health benefits.

I don’t want to need a science degree to choose a supplement!

One serving gives us:

  • 2,000 mg highly refined fish oil
  • 1,280 mg of total omega-3s
  • 650 mg of EPA
  • 450 mg of DHA
  • 8 mg astaxanthin

The bottle contains 60 softgels, so you get 30 servings.

What Are EPA and DHA?

If you’re new to fish oil supplements, EPA and DHA are two names you’ll see over and over.

EPA stands for eicosapentaenoic acid, while DHA stands for docosahexaenoic acid. They are long-chain omega-3 fatty acids found primarily in fatty fish and fish oil.

EPA and DHA are polyunsaturated fatty acids and two of the primary omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids because they’re important to the body and need to come from our diet.

EPA and DHA play different roles throughout the body and are commonly associated with supporting cardiovascular health, brain health and a healthy inflammatory response.

Palm Life gives the actual EPA and DHA content right on the Supplement Facts label: 650 mg of EPA and 450 mg of DHA per serving.

That means you’re getting a combined 1,100 mg of EPA and DHA in two softgels.

Fish Oil vs. Total Omega-3s

This was something I didn’t always understand when looking at different omega-3 supplements.

The amount of fish oil in a supplement isn’t necessarily the same as the amount of omega-3 fatty acids.

Palm Life contains 2,000 mg of highly refined fish oil per serving. From that fish oil, you get 1,280 mg of total omega-3s.

That includes:

650 mg of EPA + 450 mg of DHA

There are a lot of different omega-3 supplements available, so I think these numbers are much more helpful when comparing products than simply looking for the biggest fish oil number on the front of a bottle.

Why Does Palm Life Add Astaxanthin?

This is one of my favorite things about the formula because Palm Life Omega 3 isn’t just a basic fish oil supplement.

It also contains 8 mg of astaxanthin per serving.

Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring red-orange carotenoid produced by microalgae. Palm Life uses astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis whole algae.

Astaxanthin acts as an antioxidant and helps protect cells from oxidative stress. Palm Life includes it to support antioxidant activity and cellular health as part of an overall wellness routine.

I like having it combined with the omega-3s rather than needing another separate supplement.

Where Does the Fish Oil Come From?

This is another thing I wanted to know before using it.

According to the product label, the fish source may include:

  • Anchovy
  • Sardine
  • Mackerel
  • Herring

These types of fatty fish are natural sources of EPA and DHA.

What About Heavy Metals and Fish Oil Quality?

Quality is a big deal to me with supplements, especially with something sourced from fish.

Palm Life says its fish oil undergoes molecular distillation, a purification process used with concentrated fish oils to help reduce environmental contaminants, including heavy metals such as mercury, lead and cadmium.

Palm Life also says every lot is third-party tested for heavy-metal compliance and oxidation markers.

That testing is one of the reasons I feel comfortable using this product in our home.

What Is TOTOX?

You might notice Palm Life mentioning TOTOX when talking about its Omega 3.

TOTOX relates to the oxidative stability and freshness of an oil. Fish oil can oxidize over time, so oxidation markers can provide information about its quality.

Palm Life says it tests peroxide value (PV) and anisidine value (AV), which are used to determine TOTOX.

You definitely don’t need to memorize any of that! For me, the important part is simply knowing that Palm Life is looking at more than the amount of omega-3 in the bottle. They’re also testing the oil itself.

Palm Life Omega 3 Ingredients

I also appreciate that the ingredient list is pretty simple.

Each two-softgel serving contains:

  • Highly Refined Fish Oil: 2,000 mg
  • Total Omega-3 Fatty Acids: 1,280 mg
  • EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid): 650 mg
  • DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid): 450 mg
  • Astaxanthin: 8 mg

The other ingredients are gelatin, glycerin, purified water and organic lemon oil.

The product does contain fish.

How Do We Take Palm Life Omega 3?

Palm Life recommends taking two softgels daily with 8–12 ounces of water, or as directed by your health care provider.

There are 60 softgels in each bottle, so taking two on a daily basis gives you a 30-day supply.

I always recommend following the actual bottle directions rather than assuming that more of a supplement is better. If you have questions about adding omega-3 supplements to your routine, especially if you take medications or have a medical condition, talk with your health care provider.

Why I Chose Palm Life Omega 3

For me, choosing supplements isn’t about finding the bottle with the longest list of ingredients. I actually prefer knowing exactly what I’m getting and why it’s there.

With Palm Life Omega 3, I like that I can see the exact mg of EPA, mg of DHA and mg of total omega-3s rather than simply seeing “fish oil” on the label.

I also appreciate the combination of EPA, DHA and astaxanthin and that Palm Life provides information about its sourcing, purification and third-party testing.

Most importantly, this is a product we actually use from a company we trust. I always want to be clear about that when I’m sharing supplements here. I’m not just copying a product description. I want to share the products we’re actually comfortable bringing into our own home.

My Final Thoughts

I know there are a lot of different supplements out there, and I don’t think choosing one needs to be complicated.

For our family, I want products with ingredients I can understand, clear amounts on the label and a company we feel good about using. Palm Life Omega 3 + Astaxanthin checks those boxes for us.

I especially like that we’re getting clearly listed amounts of EPA and DHA along with astaxanthin, while Palm Life also addresses things I care about with a fish oil supplement, including sourcing, purification, heavy metals and oxidation testing.
