I had the opportunity to go to a prescreening of McFarland USA in theaters before it came out. I have always been a fan of inspirational sports movies because I feel like they are relatable to everyone, even if you are not doing that particular sport. Everyone has goals, struggles and inspirations and movies like McFarland USA really do teach that Champions can come from anywhere. It doesn’t mean that you have to be rich, have a fancy job or drive a nice car. With a little hard work and determination you can be great– whatever your goal is. I love watching these types of movies with my kids because I want them to learn and understand, that they too can be great. They can reach their goals and become who they want to be if they will just try.
I was excited to receive a copy of McFarland USA to review because my husband and kids hadn’t yet seen the movie yet. I had really been impressed by the film and was excited for my kids to learn about the passion and determination from these boys in the movie. If you have not yet seen McFarland USA, I recommend watching this movie. Here is the synopsis:
“Based on the 1987 true story, “McFarland, USA” follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school, with whom they ultimately bond to build not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well.”
This movie is entertaining, inspirational, keeps you cheering them on but also teaches so many lessons. Lessons not only about the determination and hard work of these amazing boys, but also teaches about love, sacrifice and support that can come from others in your life, like the coach was for these boys. This is a fantastic family friendly film that kids and adults will both love. Here is the trailer:
