The longer that it has been since having a newborn in the home, the more I forgot about how small and new they are.  I have five kids and the oldest is 13.  When my baby was born, my youngest was five years old.  It is amazing that in just five years it feels like everything has changed and you have to relearn everything when you bring your baby into the home.  Having a newborn in the home, I am constantly reminded how fragile my daughter is and how I have to do everything that I can to keep her healthy and safe.

This month is National RSV Awareness Month and a great time to learn about RSV and RSV disease prevention measures that we as parents can take to ensure our newborns’ health when it comes to protecting their little lungs. Talking about things like this is important so we all are aware of what we can do to help protect our little ones.

“You know how fragile your baby’s lungs are, but do you know how to protect their little lungs from this season’s biggest threat?”

To be honest with you, I wouldn’t have had any clue how to answer this question.  Often we bring our babies home from the hospital and we have to learn as we go.  This is when I turn to friends and family members and the internet so I can do my part.  During National RSV Awareness Month we can share information with those around us so we can help protect our newborns. During the months of November and March RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization for babies in their first year of live.

As we go into the colder winter months it is important that we take the appropriate steps to help keep our homes free of illnesses.  These steps included sanitizing your child’s clothes and blankets, having everyone in your home make sure that they are washing their hands and having regular check ups with your Pediatrician where you discuss RSV and the risks.
