I am a to-do list and Calendar addict.  I like to know exactly what I need to do and when.  I like order and control and highlighters. If I don’t have my calendar prepped and ready for the month, my month starts more stressful and I am likely to miss deadlines.  Sad, but true.  With four kids, we have dance, piano lessons, scouts, baseball, preschool and more and sometimes I get busy and things slip my mind.  Then the school year comes along and I still have all of these things but suddenly I have book reports, homework assignments, picture day, back to school night, field trips and more to remember.  My answer to all these to-do items?  A color coordinated calendar.

This year is a big one for me.  I have four kids and starting this year all four of my kids are in school at least part of the day.  This will be nice because a get a few hours each week where I can really tackle my to-do lists, but boy, sob, sob, its hard to send kids away to school.  Luckily all four of my kids love school which makes it a lot easier.  To help me prepare for a FOUR Kid school year, I headed over to Office Depot for some Back to School shopping.  There I find some great deals  on fantastic organization products like:

  • Save $5 Off your purchase of $20 or more on Select Newell Rubbermaid Brands (PaperMate, Expo Neon Window Markers, Sharpie, Uni-Ball, & Mr. Sketch)
  • Weekly savings from (Aug 31-Sept 6): Sharpie Clearview Highlighter 3PK:  $4, PaperMate Clearpoint 2PK’s:  $3, Select Expo Chisel & Ultra Fine 4PK’s:  $2

I quickly found my way to the Office Depot Sharpie aisle.  I love sharpies.  I own dozens of colors of sharpies and use them in all of my organizing but quickly realized that these weren’t going to work for a calendar.  It is then when I discovered a fantastic thing.  Sharpie highlighters.  Same great brand but highlighter form? Yes please! I used the great discount above and bought Sharpie highlighters, PaperMate pens and Uni-Ball pens.  (You can never have too many pens, ESPECIALLY when they are fun colors!!)

ColorCoordinated

For me,  color coordinated is so important.  This helps me because I am able to see a color on the calendar and know exactly who has the scheduled event.  It makes it faster and easier for me to be organized.  Everyone is different, but this works best for me.  The Sharpie Highlighter was perfect because I was able to use one color for each of my kids and then one for me since I have back to school meetings, too.

My calendar sits on my work desk where I see it every morning.  I keep my Sharpie Highlighters and pens in jars next to it (are jars not the most convenient thing!!) so when I new event comes up I can quickly add it to my calendar and keep us organized.  We are now two weeks into school and so far so good, we haven’t missed any Back to School events! 🙂  Here’s to lots more organized months of band performances, math tests and field trips!
