How to Create a Relaxing Home Environment

Home is the one place you’re safe to truly be yourself. It’s your oasis from the outside world.

However, even if you love your home, it may not feel relaxing. If you find yourself feeling irritated and anxious rather than relaxed when you walk through the door, there are a few quick changes you can make to calm things down.

Declutter Key Areas

Clutter can not only turn your home in a minefield, but it also affects your psychological health. If your home is filled to the brim and unorganized, the clutter can trigger the release of the stress hormone cortisol. 

Start by decluttering the key areas of your home—the kitchen, living room, and bedroom. You can get rid of items you don’t use or need, organize what you have, or a combination of both.

Ask yourself if each item is essential or adding meaning and purpose to your life. If not, throw it away or donate it. 

Once you’ve got your rooms decluttered, the trick is keeping them that way. We suggest making decluttering part of your daily routine. Pick up before you go to bed or always put something away when you’re leaving a room.

Keep things clean and tidy by throwing away junk mail and putting away books, coats, and shoes when you’re done with them. A lightweight upright or hand vacuum can be priceless for keeping the floor clean and clear every day.

Color for Calm

Color plays a role in your psychological well-being too. Some colors like red invigorate and can actually make your body temperature rise. Others like cool blues and greens are known to calm and soothe.

Be mindful of your color scheme. Cool neutrals like gray, silver, and white have the most soothing potential. Pastels in cool and warm colors can also be calming.

If bright colors are more your style, add in pops of color through accessories, textiles, and furniture or try an accent wall. 

All that being said, how you react to a specific color also depends on your cultural and personal experiences.

Colors that are associated with grief or mourning probably won’t make the most relaxing place to kick up your feet. Pick colors that help you feel at home and calm no matter what they are.

Light for Ambiance

Light your home for the right mood. Dimmer switches can be your best friends. When you’re looking to relax, low light levels are less stimulating and more calming.

You can set the light level based on the activity you’re doing—bright for your craft day and low when you’re lying back listening to music. 

Smart bulbs are an option for setting ambiance in advance. Some models can be can be programmed to turn on at certain times or adjusted to different light levels depending on the time of day.

The mood can be set without you having to think about it.

Soothe Your Senses and Breathe Deep

Make your home appeal to your senses. Relaxing scents like lavender, chamomile, and jasmine have been shown to calm the nerves and reduce stress.

Create a relaxing playlist with your favorite low key tunes ready to go when you’re in the mood to shut things down for the day. 

A relaxing home is about setting the stage then maintaining it. Small changes like adjusting your lighting and color scheme can do wonders for your mental health.

Life still happens, but when you have a home that’s tailored to you and your lifestyle, stress can stay outside where it belongs.
