 I am very excited to be participating in the Beano “All Natural” Virtual Cook-Off campaign challenge. I received a promotional item and Beano product to thank me for my time in the campaign. All opinions are my own. For this campaign, I have chosen to make Homemade Chicken Barley Soup served with Whole Wheat Bread.

I love food. I mean really, who doesn’t! But check out this list! Many of my favorite cooking ingredients are all-natural, gas-inducing ingredients! I had no idea! But luckily, there is a solution. Beano® helps you to enjoy all your favorite healthy ingredients with their Beano® Tablets, Beano® Meltaways and Beano® To Go. As part of the “Be Natural” Virtual Cook-off, I was asked to make a recipe using 5 of the ingredients listed above.

My 5 all-natural, gas inducing ingredients:

1. Sweet Peppers
2. Corn
3. Barley
4. Onions
5. Whole Wheat Flour

2 pieces of chicken
1 cup barley
1 cup celery 
1 cup carrots
1 sweet bell pepper
1/2 onion
1 cup green beans
1 cup diced tomatoes
1 cup frozen corn
6 cups chicken broth
Fresh Rosemary
Fresh Basil
Whole Wheat Tortilla Strips
Sour Cream

Add TWO pieces of Frozen Chicken to the Bottom of your Crock Pot
Add 1 Cup Barley on top of your chicken.
Next add your cut up celery and carrots.
Now add your onions and sweet peppers.
Add 1 cup frozen corn
Add 1 cup green beans. I prefer canned French Style Green Beans.
Add 1 cup diced tomatoes.
Add 6 cups Chicken Broth. If you have a bigger crock pot. I recommend adding 1 or 2 more. 
Add 2 sprigs Rosemary and 2 Fresh Basil Leaves
Cook on Low for 6 hours. It will look like this when it is finished. 
Add Salt and Pepper to taste. We added about 1 teaspoon of each.
At this point, you need to remove the chicken, shred it to desired size and return to your crock pot. Mix all ingredients together, enjoy the delicious smell of your homemade soup, and set your table to eat!

Top your Soup with Whole Wheat Tortilla Strips, 1 T sour cream and a rosemary.
How to Make Whole Wheat Tortilla Strips


  • 3½ cups whole-wheat flour 
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup hot water (I just heat it up from the tap)


1. Mix all ingredients in bowl.
2. Combine until dough is wet.
3. Divide dough into 12 small pieces pieces and roll into balls.
4. Flour your service and roll out dough until its the desired size and thickness.
5. Pre-heat griddle. (I didn’t need to grease my griddle because of the oil in the recipe)
6. Cook on one side until you see large bubbles then flip.
7. Cook until both sides are light brown.
8. Remove from griddle and put on plate with a paper towel on it. (We put another plate over the top to keep them fresh and warm)
9. When cooled, cut tortillas in small strips.
10. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
11. Bake Tortillas Strips 4 minutes, flip then 4 minutes on the other side until crispy.
12. Cool and add to soup.

Important to watch your tortilla strips to make sure they don’t cook darker  than desired.

We like to serve our soup with a side of fresh out of the bread maker Whole Wheat Bread.

Whole Wheat Bread

  • 1-1/2 cups warm tap water
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast

Bread Makers are awesome. Just add all ingredients above in the order listed, set your bread maker to the Whole Wheat Bread setting and start.
